Hello, everybody! I’m Julia and you’re welcome to join us for studying a little bit of grammar.

Today we’ll talk about Second Conditional.

Do you like to dream? I know I do. Sometimes I think: If I had a vacation, I would be on the beach right now. Sunbathing, swimming, drinking ice tea…

Well, enough of that. I wanted to tell you about Second Conditional.

Нам потрібен Second Conditional, щоб поговорити про уявні або малоймовірні ситуації, або ж просто помріяти.

Let’s look at some more examples.

If my friend had more free time, she would go out more often.

В даному випадку ми маємо уявну ситуацію. Якби в моєї подруги було більше вільного часу, вона б частіше ходила гуляти.

В першій частині Second Conditional, частині з If –  If my friend had more free time – вживаємо If + Past Simple.

В другій частині – she would go out more often – використовуємо would + Infinitive.

Now let’s put this sentence together once again.

If my friend had more free time, she would go out more often.

If John won a running race, he would get a big money prize.

Якби Джон виграв забіг, то отримав би великий грошовий приз. В цьому реченні ми розглядаємо малоймовірний варіант, що Джон виграє забіг.

Частини речення Second Conditional також можна міняти місцями.

My friend would go out more often if she had more free time.

І знову ж таки наявність коми залежить від того, яка частина пишеться першою.

Let’s also have some examples with negative.

She wouldn’t be good at her job if she didn’t work hard.

If you listened attentively, you wouldn’t have questions.

Attention! Avoid common mistakes!

Так само як в First Conditional не можна було ставити will в ту частину речення де є If, в Second Conditional в частині з If  не вживається would.

Неправильно говорити:

I would buy a new car if I would have more money.

Варто сказати:

I would buy a new car if I had more money. If + Past Simple.

However there is a special type of Second Conditional sentences.

If I were you, I would get more sleep. – На твоєму місці я б більше спала.

Речення типу IfIwereyouвикористовуються тоді, коли ми хочемо дати пораду.

Please pay attention that we always say If I were you not If I was you.

If I were you, I would eat more fruit and vegetables.

Now is the time for a little pronunciation tip. In the Second Conditional sentence would can be shortened to ‘d.

Let’s have a look.

If John won a running race, he would get a big money prize.

or

If John won a running race, he’d get a big money prize.

If I were you, I would get more sleep.

or

If I were you, I’d get more sleep.

And now how about a little quiz.

Is the sentence correct?

We would get in his car if he would be a more careful driver.

There’s a mistake in the if he would be a more careful driver part. We should say: if he was a more careful driver.

How about this one?

If we were rich, we could afford a big house by the ocean.

The sentence is correct.

Now, guys, this is all about the Second Conditional. I hope you’ve enjoyed this session and please join us for more.
